Monster

I feel very ill-equipped to deal with my Future. It is a beast of unknown strength, terrifying appetites and massive girth, which completely blocks any light that may be shining at the end of "the tunnel". I can hardly keep my sword in my hand, but I certainly don't have the power to lift it and fight. I don't even know if the Future is an enemy, but so far it doesn't look like a friend.

First of all, I LOVE the picture. Secondly, I'm reading a book called Stumbling on Happiness in which Daniel Gilbert (Harvard psychology PhD. blah, blah) declares humans are the only animal that think about the future. This is not storing nuts for the winter instincts that kick in as sunlight decreases incrementally, but the ability to imagine and plan. The same place in our frontal lobe that controls planning, also control anxiety. Sometimes imagining the future helps us feel like we have some control. Sometimes it gives us anxiety.

I'm only on page 32. So far, it matches my experience that feeling a sense of control imparts a sense of well-being and that people who have no sense of the future, have no anxiety. Hmmm... long way to go yet, but I'm already seeing some value to practicing meditation. I'd like to keep my frontal lobe (thank you), but use it to make good plans rather than let it run away with fearful predictions. Augh. I'm so human.

I love you!

I think you should add some things to that cool picture. Like maybe an army of sisters with swords raised, flanking your sides. Or the sky filled with angels with bows and arrows raised at the monster. Or maybe the monster can have a bunch of different faces like that guy from He-Man. My Future vascillates between horrifying, super exciting, and kind of boring. Maybe you could just get a bunch of Alots to gang up on the monster. =) You could have Alot of friends, Alot of cake, Alot of helping hands, Alot of love. :)
